Acne Treatments - Part Three

Whenever you see a change in your skin you should always consult a doctor. Chances are it's acne, but other conditions such as cancer can be similar in appearance, and early treatment can make the difference between life and death.

Even if your skin condition is simply acne and you wish to treat it on your own, a dermatologist can give you valuable advice about the types of acne treatment that will be most effective.

Most case of mild or moderate acne can be treated with over-the-counter (OTC) medications, but the added intervention of a dermatologist to monitor your condition and to provide several treatment options can help to keep your acne under control. More severe cases of acne should always be treated by a dermatologist.

A dermatologist can prescribe stronger acne treatments than can be bought OTC. These include antibiotics that can be taken orally or applied topically. Prescription acne treatments can also include ingredients such as zinc or retinoids which are effective against severe cases of acne.

Antibiotics for Acne Treatment

There are several different types of antibiotics, but the most common for acne treatments is tetracycline. This acne treatment is useful for killing the bacteria which is responsible for acne and also in reducing the inflammation caused by bacterial infection.

Tetracycline treatment will not clear up your acne immediately. It may be several weeks before your acne begins to disappear, and the tetracycline must continue to be taken even after the pimples have cleared up.

Tetracycline also has some side effects which may affect some patients. A common side effect of this acne treatment it is increased sensitivity to sunlight causing the skin to darken or burn faster than usual. Some patients report symptoms such as an upset stomach, dizziness, and hives when taking tetracycline, and it should be avoided by pregnant women.

Doxycycline is another antibiotic which is used in acne treatments.
